The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday warned consumers against taking the prescription drug Celebrex after its manufacturer, Vioxx Inc., confirmed that it would not reimburse consumers for its cost of the drug.
The warning came as the Food and Drug Administration is conducting a review into the safety of Celebrex, which is prescribed to treat arthritis and other pain.
In its letter to Vioxx, the agency noted that Vioxx "has shown no adverse effects on the kidneys" and that the drug had not been approved for use in patients with kidney disease. Celebrex is a drug that blocks the COX-2 enzyme, and in patients with renal impairment, the COX-2 is not the same as the COX-1.
Vioxx's maker, AstraZeneca PLC, has not yet decided whether to reimburse the company, as the FDA has said it will. It is also conducting a review of Vioxx's safety, but has yet to determine whether it will be covered by insurance, as the manufacturer had said.
Celebrex's manufacturer, Vioxx Inc., said its website on Celebrex had no description of its potential drug risks. The company said it would appeal to consumers.
Vioxx said it would not offer discounts, which would allow the company to reduce the cost of its Celebrex drug by up to 50%.
The company also said it has been working closely with the FDA to make its decision and will monitor its website, and will review the potential side effects and warnings of the drug.
The company said it has also been conducting additional studies to identify any drug interactions that may occur with Celebrex.
"We will monitor our website to ensure there are no drug interactions that may occur with Celebrex," said Steven Levitt, Vioxx's spokesman.
